  • IS PLANNING PERMISSION REQUIRED FOR A LOFT CONVERSION?
    In most cases, loft conversions do not require planning permission due to permitted development rights. However, there are specific guidelines that must be followed, including: -A maximum volume allowance of 40 cubic meters for terraced housing -A maximum volume allowance of 50 cubic meters for detached and semi-detached housing -No extension beyond the existing roof slope on the main elevation facing the highway -The highest point of the extension should not exceed the highest part of the roof -Materials used should be similar in appearance to the existing house -No balconies, verandas, or raised platforms are allowed -Dormers should not be on the front elevation facing the road or intruding on your neighbour's privacy -Side-facing windows should be obscure-glazed with the opening positioned at least 1.7 meters above the floor -Roof extensions, except hip-to-gable conversions, should be set back at least 20cm from the room's edge -The permitted development limit of 15% of the original size should not have been reached by previous extensions to your house Please note that these guidelines serve as a general overview, and it is advisable to consult with professionals or your Local Planning Office to ensure compliance with specific requirements for your loft conversion project.
